1000 liter water-holding tank, priming pump, cartridge filter unit, compressed air/water stabilizer unit, high-pressure piston pump, single-head pre-wet, 3 jet boxes, air/water separator, transport belt unit, suction-fan arrangement, a range of aperture belts and jets strips.

The pilot facility has been used to compare different compositional designs and assess processability. The hydro-entangling facility allows for the production of lengths of finished nonwoven fabric for onward assessment and gives some guidance as to the ultimate entangling performance of a specific fibre. The concepts can be made and tested for physical performance using normal testing equipment used for full-scale production.

A reasonable correlation exists between the performance of the pilot hall prepared fabrics and full-scale production lines.

Spunlace nonwoven fabrics can be prepared by taking carded webs with pre-selected fibre blends and basis weights, which are then fed into the hydro-entanglement unit. This allows the production of a finished spunlace nonwoven fabric, which will replicate a full-scale spunlace line.

Hydro-entanglement pressure can be varied up to a pressure of 150 bar to give greater or lesser degrees of hydro-entanglement, creating finished webs of different strength and bulk characteristics.

The pilot line has similar capabilities as a full-scale line in that there are a selection of available forming belts onto which the web is hydro-entangled. These replicate the types of pattern and aperture designs that can be achieved on a production line. The belts vary from a plain lacing pattern to different aperture designs and degree of openness.
